Specialist neonatal care if needed

To ensure your baby is completely healthy after it’s born, our neonatologists will undertake a series of checks for newborn babies to ensure your baby is ready to leave hospital.  They will also have a hearing screening test performed by one of our specialist team before going home.

Babies sometimes need some extra care in the first days of life. This may mean your baby needs to be admitted to our neonatal unit, where our highly specialised team of doctors and nurses will care for your baby in our state-of-the-art facilities. This may be because your baby has been born prematurely, or has a condition picked up during pregnancy.

There are also some circumstances where, although your baby is well enough to stay with you on The Westminster Maternity Suite, they need to be reviewed regularly by our specialist medical staff and you may both need to stay a little longer in hospital before you are ready to go home. This care will be led by our consultant neonatologists, and our team will ensure you are supported every step of the way.

In addition to the advanced care offered within The Westminster Suite, you will also be able to take advantage of other facilities at St Thomas’.
