Vascular surgery

Guy’s and St Thomas’ vascular unit is a specialist unit providing diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the blood vessels. We have a team of specialist surgeons, radiologists, doctors and nurses to look after you.

The department is the hub of the South East Thames Vascular Network. We provide emergency and elective vascular services.

We are a national tertiary referral centre for complex aortic disease specialising in endovascular and open surgery for aneurysms and aortic dissection.

We also have a specialist interest in diabetic patients with vascular disease and have a group of surgeons, radiologists, physicians and podiatrists who provide a multidisciplinary care for these patients. We are committed to supporting our spoke hospitals diabetes services.

We offer a number of specialist vascular services.

Other vascular conditions we treat

Lymphoedema – we have an international reputation as a centre for treating patients with lymphoedema. Some patients with severe problems need reduction operations. There is now increasing use of tumescent liposuction for the management of lymphodema. Research performed by the academic unit has shown a genetic basis for lymphoedema.

Arteriovenous malformations – these complex problems can be investigated with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), which is the a study of the blood vessels using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and digital subtraction angiography. Treatment can be by endovascular embolisation and/or open surgery.

Thoracic outlet syndrome – this condition can be caused by an extra (cervical) rib or narrowing and can present with thrombosis or vascular and neurological symptoms affecting the arm. We offer surgery to relieve the compression on the artery, vein and nerves.

Treatment is provided in outpatient, day-case, inpatient and community settings.

The cardiovascular centre also houses the South East London Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening service, specialised vascular ultrasound services and has strong links with the King’s College London cardiac imaging service.
